SLUG FEST IN FITZGERALD:
JD WINS FINAL ROUND 29-20
Two unbeaten teams traded blows for four quarters, but the Jackets had the final answer in Fitzgerald.
Some football games unfold neatly.
This was not one of them.
The brisk Friday night at Jaycee Stadium felt more like a fight than a football game, which made Coach Helton’s postgame comparison especially fitting. He said the effort was likened to a Mike Tyson fight in which the boxer absorbed the hard rounds, stayed in it and eventually found the punch that decided the match.
That was Jeff Davis.
The Jackets did not control every stretch of the game. Fitzgerald answered them more than once. Momentum changed sides. The score was tied twice, and with a little more than five minutes remaining, one point separated the two teams.
Our Jackets kept answering.
And in the final round, the Jackets landed the last punch.
FIRST BLOOD:
Jeff Davis struck first midway through the opening quarter when #16 Mark Durden broke free for a 16-yard touchdown run. Calderon's extra point made it 7-0, and for most of the first half the Jacket defense kept Fitzgerald from finding the end zone.
Then came the kind of score that can change the feel of a locker room.
With only 25 seconds remaining before halftime, Fitzgerald QB Caden Cowan connected with Darryon “Pookie” Devine for a 24-yard touchdown.
Instead of carrying a lead into the break, Jeff Davis walked off tied 7-7.
Last year, these two teams were also tied at halftime in Fitzgerald before the Purple Hurricane eventually pulled away for a 35-21 win.
This time, the second half went differently.
JEFF DAVIS CAME OUT SWINGING:
Fitzgerald kicked off to open the third quarter, and Durden immediately flipped the field with a return of roughly 50 yards. Less than two minutes into the half, he finished the possession himself.
Durden scored with 10:22 remaining in the third, giving Jeff Davis the lead back at 14-7.
Then Fitzgerald put the ball on the ground.
Jeff Davis recovered the fumble and had an opportunity to turn the mistake into more points, but the Jackets eventually had to punt.
Fitzgerald survived the turnover and came back again.
With 2:05 remaining in the third quarter, the Purple Hurricane scored and added the extra point.
14-14. Another round even.
THE FOURTH QUARTER BECAME THE FIGHT:
Jeff Davis had already begun its next drive before the third quarter ended, and this one would become one of the most important possessions of the night.
Facing fourth-and-seven, Braylon Varnadore broke loose for 32 yards and carried the Jackets all the way to the Fitzgerald 3-yard line. Kobe Hill finished it from there. Touchdown. 21-14.
The lead did not last comfortably for long.
Fitzgerald answered with an 80-yard drive of its own, scoring on a 2-yard run with 5:15 remaining.
Then came one of those small moments that feels much bigger when the game is this tight.
Jeff Davis was offsides on the conversion attempt, giving Fitzgerald the opportunity to move closer and go for two.
The Hurricane took it.
They didn't make it in.
Jeff Davis still led, 21-20.
One point.
5:15 left before the bell.
THE DRIVE THAT WON IT:
Jeff Davis took the ball and went 62 yards in eight plays.
There was no quick knockout. The Jackets had to earn the drive.
On fourth-and-one, Durden broke a 14-yard run to keep the possession alive.
Then, with 1:21 remaining, Kobe Hill found daylight.
Twenty-six yards.
Touchdown!
The sideline erupted, but the Jackets were not finished.
Durden found Jacob Laney for the two-point conversion, turning a one-point game into a 29-20 lead.
For nearly four quarters, every Jeff Davis score had brought a Fitzgerald response.
Not this time.
The Jacket defense stopped the Hurricane on downs, and the offense came back onto the field to finish the final seconds.
GAME. OVER.
Jeff Davis 29.
Fitzgerald 20.
THE NUMBERS TELL PART OF IT:
Jeff Davis rushed for 229 yards and scored all four of its touchdowns on the ground.
#34 Kobe Hill finished with 91 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.
#16 Mark Durden added 83 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries.
#35 Braylon Varnadore’s 32-yard run on fourth-and-seven may have been one of the biggest plays of the night.
Fitzgerald actually finished with a slight edge in total offense, 260-241.
That is part of what made this victory feel different.
Jeff Davis did not have to dominate the box score to win the game.
The Jackets had to win moments.
They converted when the field got short. They answered when Fitzgerald tied it. They survived Fitzgerald pulling within one. They converted a fourth down when the final drive depended on it.
Then the defense closed the door.
THE HISTORY MAKES THIS ONE BIGGER:
The recent history between these programs gives the win even more weight.
2025 — Fitzgerald 35-21
2024 — Jeff Davis 26-20
2023 — Fitzgerald 48-0
2022 — Fitzgerald 48-0
There was a time, not very long ago, when Fitzgerald had complete control of this matchup. Now Jeff Davis has beaten the Purple Hurricane twice in three seasons.
Friday’s win also moved the Jackets to 5-0 and 1-0 in region play.
And then came another piece of history.
Jeff Davis rose to No. 2 in Class 2A, the program’s highest AJC ranking since 1962.
1962 has become part of the conversation again because this team keeps reaching places Jeff Davis football has not occupied in decades.
THE LAST ROUND:
In the end, Coach Helton compared this game to a fight.
Not something won with the first punch.
Not something lost because one round went badly.
Stay composed.
Reset.
Keep fighting.
Friday night, Fitzgerald kept answering.
Jeff Davis did too.
The Purple Hurricane tied the game before halftime.
Jeff Davis answered after the break.
Fitzgerald tied it again.
Jeff Davis answered again.
Fitzgerald pulled within one point with 5:15 left.
And Jeff Davis answered one last time.
That may be the clearest picture yet of what this team is becoming.
Not a team that has to have everything go its way.
A team learning how to stay in the fight when it doesn’t.
At Jaycee Stadium, in a game that stayed uncomfortable until the end, Jeff Davis did not win every round.
They won the slugfest.
