Jeff Davis Opens 2026 Season With 37-0 Shutout of Vidalia
HAZLEHURST, Ga. — Jeff Davis opened the 2026 football season with a complete performance Friday night, defeating Vidalia 37-0 at The Pinelands behind a productive rushing attack, strong special teams play and a defense that kept the Indians off the scoreboard from start to finish.
The season opener began later than expected after thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain and winds delayed pregame activities in Hazlehurst. Once play began, however, the Yellow Jackets wasted little time establishing control.
Jeff Davis took the opening possession and moved efficiently down the field, finishing the drive with senior fullback Kobe Hill’s 3-yard touchdown run. The Yellow Jackets then made an immediate impact on special teams. On the ensuing kickoff, the wet football stopped near the goal line instead of carrying into the end zone, forcing Vidalia to field it. Jeff Davis’ coverage unit closed quickly and made the tackle in the end zone for a safety, giving the Jackets a 9-0 advantage.
That early sequence set the tone for a night in which Jeff Davis consistently won the field-position battle while limiting Vidalia’s opportunities.
The Jackets extended the lead early in the second quarter when junior Jacob Laney took a pitch, cut inside and scored from 10 yards out. Later in the half, quarterback Mark Durden added another rushing touchdown as Jeff Davis built a 23-0 halftime advantage.
Jeff Davis did nearly all of its offensive work on the ground. At halftime, the Jackets had accumulated 169 rushing yards on 29 plays while attempting just one pass. Vidalia, meanwhile, entered the break with 33 total yards on 21 plays as the Jeff Davis defense consistently disrupted the Indians’ running game and pressured the passing attack.
The Jackets continued to pull away after halftime.
Hill scored again on an 11-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, extending the advantage to 30-0. Later in the period, Durden kept the ball on an option play and raced toward the pylon for his second touchdown of the night, pushing the score to 37-0.
From there, the Jeff Davis defense preserved the shutout despite Vidalia finding occasional success through the air and producing several late drives into Yellow Jacket territory.
Vidalia quarterback Henry Adams connected on passes to receivers including Bryson Burns and Jamarcus Buller, and the Indians continued competing into the fourth quarter. Jeff Davis’ defense, however, repeatedly prevented those possessions from turning into points. Defensive backs broke up passes downfield, the front generated pressure and the Jackets rallied effectively to the football.
The final statistics reflected the contrast in styles. Jeff Davis finished with 287 total yards on 48 plays, all of them rushing yards, while Vidalia was held to 101 total yards on 44 offensive plays. Durden finished with 60 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Hill scored twice. Reserve runner Cam Vann added 55 yards, including one of the Jackets’ longest runs of the night.
Both teams were assessed eight penalties, providing an early-season area for improvement despite the decisive final margin.
For Jeff Davis, the victory represents an encouraging start for a roster that entered the season young but experienced at several positions. The Jackets returned numerous players who saw significant varsity action a year ago, particularly along the offensive line and throughout the defense.
For Vidalia, the opener marked the beginning of a new chapter under head coach Zach Grage. The Indians entered the season looking to rebound following an uncharacteristically difficult 2025 campaign for one of Georgia’s historically successful high school football programs. Despite the final score, Vidalia showed flashes in the passing game and continued moving the football late against a Jeff Davis defense determined to protect the shutout.
Jeff Davis improves to 1-0 with the victory and now turns to an extended stretch away from home. The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to travel to Clinch County next before continuing a challenging early-season road slate.
